WHERE TO FIND US 25 Cambridge Olifants West Nature Reserve Hoedspruit Limpopo Province 1380 South Africa The Big 5 Reserve, Greater Kruger. Olifants West Nature Reserve was established by a group of like-minded, private landowners in the early 1990s. From the start, their objective was to create a larger, open system with no fences to hinder animal movement thus creating a much healthier habitat for fauna and flora. Thus, we are now part of an open system that covers over 2 million hectares in South Africa and is widely regarded as one of the most successful conservation areas in the world. Olifants West Nature Reserve is mostly made up of mixed Acacia and Combretum woodlands, which sustain 94 mammals, 280 bird, 72 reptile and 128 tree species, not to mention the insect, fish, amphibian and other plant species. Notably, it is the birthplace of a unique anti-poaching initiative, the Black Mamba Anti-Poaching Environmental Monitors, recruited from the surrounding communities. They are doing a fantastic job in keeping our rhino safe and in the process, have gained worldwide recognition and environmental awards. We are becoming increasingly integrated within the Kruger National Park environmental policy framework. This means commitment to long term projects towards providing support for the upliftment of the surrounding local communities. Sausage Tree Safari Camp is proud to be part of this massive undertaking and will continue to help protect and support this very special conservation area for future generations. It is in these amazing wilderness areas where a traveler can still find an authentic safari experience.

The Cuisine Pitso is our magician in the kitchen. He is one of the three original staff we inherited many years ago and at that point had no prior experience in cooking. Under Sonja’s guidance and training , Pitso progressed rapidly, clearly a natural and before long the umbilical was cut. Today his passion and skills in the kitchen consistently produces meals of a quality that draw praise and accolades in our guests’ reviews. Kabelo, a graduate from Daktari Bush School & Wildlife Orphanage, is Pitso's accomplished assistant Other than enjoying the variety of the cuisine , their home baked special seeded bran rusks will definitely have you looking forward to your first cup of coffee at sunrise. Homemade muffins , assorted breads, cakes and cookies punctuate the rest of your day.

Themba, Polite and Life have many years of tracking between them, the majority being on our reserve, so they literally know every, rock, bush and tree, developing uncanny powers of vision and spoor deduction. Their guiding has earned nothing but wonder and praise from all our guests since since they teamed up together, taking it in turns to guide and track for each other. Their knowledge of the bush is deep and authentic based on first hand experience, not just relying on study and books. They delight in sharing their knowledge and passion with you from the smallest insect to the behaviour of the largest mammals. You will be fascinated by their identification and explanation of trees and plants and their medical and traditional uses. They have a repertoire of ranger stories and jokes and pour a mean gin and tonic too.
