The Tower - A Guoman Hotel

(ausführliche Bewertung/detailed review) Ein sehr großes Hotel mit zwölf Stockwerke und ein paar hundert Zimmer. Von außen wirkt das Hotel wenig einladend – ein großer Betonbau in einem schmutzigen grau-braun. Innen präsentiert er sich glücklicherweise deutlich freundlicher in einem Stil, den zumindest ich als Nicht-Engländer mit „typisch englisch“ beschreiben würde. Einigen Bereichen, insbesondere den Zimmer und deren Ausstattung, merkt man deutlich deren Alter an. Die allgemeinen Bereiche wie Empfang, Gastronomie und Besprechungsräume sind jedoch top hergerichtet. Das Hotel wird von Geschäftsleuten und Touristen gleichermaßen benutzt, wobei nach meiner Einschätzung erstere deutlich überwiegen (was vermutlich mit an den Preisen liegen dürfte). A very large hotel with twelve floors and a few hundred rooms. From the outside the hotel looks very inviting - a large concrete building in a dirty gray-brown. Inside it presents fortunately much friendlier in a style that at least I, as non-Englishman, would describe as "typically English". Some areas, especially the rooms and their equipment, you can clearly look theirs age. The common areas such as reception, restaurant and meeting rooms, however, are best prepared. The hotel is used by business people and tourists alike, which in my estimation, the former clearly outweigh (which should probably be with the prices). London ist generell sehr teuer. Bei dem The Tower a Guoman Hotel zahlt man noch einen kräftigen Aufschlag für die exklusive Lage an der Themse und den Ausblick auf die Tower Bridge. Der Service ist erste Klasse und kaum zu toppen. Nachholbedarf besteht jedoch bei den Zimmer (zumindest welches ich hatte). Hier ist eine Generalsanierung dringend angebracht. Auch in den Fluren sind die Teppiche oftmals sehr abgenützt. Als Schutz vor Lädierungen (Macken) sind im Flur an den Wandecken Kunststoffkanten (Plexiglas) angebracht. Ein Großteil hiervon ist jedoch inzwischen defekt, und häufig hängt nur noch ein abgebrochenes teil hiervon an der Wand. Dies sieht einfach schlampig und heruntergekommen aus, und nicht würdig für ein solches Hotel. Von daher ist der Preis aus meiner Sicht überteuert. Hierfür kann erwartet werden, daß Hotel besser in Schuss ist. Daher gerade noch eine Empfehlung (mit oben genannten Einschränkungen). London is generally very expensive. In the "The Tower a Guoman Hotel" you pay a huge extra charge for the exclusive location on the Thames and the Tower Bridge view. The service is first class and hard to beat. Where there is a lot of catching up to do in the rooms (at least in the room I had). Here is a general renovation urgently necessary. Even the carpets in the corridors are often very worn. As a protection against damages plastic protectors (Plexiglas) are mounted in the hallway at the wall corners. However, a large part of these protectors are destroyed, and often just a broken portion is at the wall. This just looks sloppy and shabby, and not worthy of such a hotel. Therefore, the price in my opinion is overpriced. For this price it can be expected that the hotel is in better condition. Therefore, only just a recommendation (with above limitations).

Das Zimmer, das ich hatte, lag im achten Stock mit Blick auf die Tower Bridge. Wobei für die Zimmer mit „Tower View“ wird ein Zuschlag verlangt wird. Das Zimmer war angenehm groß mit sehr bequemenden Doppelbett und Schreibtisch. Weiterhin waren ein Fernseher (mit RTL als einzigem deutschsprachigem Programm), Zimmersafe, Bügelbrett + Bügeleisen (typisch britisch) und Wasserkocher vorhanden. An einer Schranktür befand sich zwar ein Schild Bar/Kühlschrank, ließ sich jedoch nicht öffnen (außer Funktion, da kein Schloß vorhanden war?). Im Bad ging es nicht ganz so großzügig zu, es war jedoch ausreichend groß. Es war eine Badewanne mit Duschvorhang vorhanden. Dem Zimmer merkte man deutlich sein Alter an. Sämtliche Holzteile, egal ob Türe, Schrank oder Schreibtisch, hatten ihre Macken und Schrammen. Alles war zwar sauber, aber eine (Teil-)Renovierung wäre dringend angeraten. Gesprungene Fliesen im Bad oder total verschrammte Türen (siehe Bilder) müssen dann doch nicht sein. Außerdem habe ich eine ausgesprochene Abneigung gegen Duschvorhänge, die die unangenehme Eigenschaft haben, am Körper kleben zu bleiben. Eine feste Duschkabine sollte in einem Hotel dieser Kategorie und Preisklasse drin sein. The room I had was on the eighth floor with Tower Bridge view. Where for the room with "Tower View" a surcharge is required. The room was a good size with very comfortable twin bed and desk. Furthermore, a TV (with RTL as the only German-language program), in room safe, ironing board + iron (typically British) and kettle were available. On a door of the borad was a lable „bar/fridge“, but it could not be opened (except function, since no lock was available?). The bathroom was to not quite so generous, but it was big enough. There was a bathtub with shower curtain available. The room looks ist age. All wooden parts, whether door, cabinet or desk, had their flaws and scratches. Everything was clean, but a (partial) restoration would be strongly recommended. Cracked tiles in the bathroom or totally scarred doors (see pictures) must not be. I also have a pronounced aversion to shower curtains that have an irritating habit to stick to the body. A fixed shower stall should be in a hotel in this class and price range standard.

Es gibt „Englisches Frühstück“. Der Schwerpunkt liegt somit auf Müsli, Toastbrot und Croissant. Frische Wecken und Brezeln kann man in England nicht erwarten. Aber es ist ausreichend und für jeden etwas da. Kleiner Tip: das Frühstück kostet (wenn man nicht Übernachtung + Frühstück gebucht hat) 12.- Pfund. In unmittelbarer Umgebung (hinter dem Hotel am Hafen) gibt es mehrere Restaurants, die für rund den halben Preis Frühstück anbieten. "English breakfast" is offered. The focus is thus on cereal, toast and croissant. Fresh „Brötchen“ (rolls) and „Brezeln“ can not be expected in England. But it is sufficient and something for everyone. Tip: the Breakfast costs (if you have not booked accommodation and breakfast) 12.- pounds in the hotel. immediate neighbourhood (behind the hotel on the harbor), there are several restaurants that offer breakfast for around half the price.

Genau das, was man sich unter britischen Service vorstellt: zuvorkommend, aufmerksam und freundlich. Besser geht es eigentlich nicht. In dem Hotel wimmelt es nur so vor Angestellten. Es ist sofort jemand zur Stelle, wenn man sich nur suchend umschaut. Nicht wie in anderen Hotels, in denen man oftmals Minuten zubringt, einen Mitarbeiter aufzutreiben, oder eine Ewigkeit die Klingel an der Rezeption bearbeiten muß, ehe jemand auftaucht. Hier wird einem das Gefühl vermitteln, als Gast der König zu sein. Exactly what you expect from British service: courteous, attentive and friendly. Could not be better. In the hotel it swarms wirh employees. Immediately someone is on the spot, if you are just looking araound. Not like in other hotels where you often spend minutes to find an employee, or you must work on the bell at the front desk for minutes until anyone is coming. Here you have the feeling of being king as guest.

Das Hotel liegt direkt an der Themse, unmittelbar neben der Tower Bridge und dem Tower. Die nächst gelegene U-Bahnstation (Tower Hill) ist ca. 200 m entfernt und in fünf Minuten zu Fuß zu erreichen. Somit liegt das Hotel zentral mitten in London und bietet einen optimalen Ausgangspunkt für Stadtbesichtigungen. The hotel is located on the River Thames, next to Tower Bridge and the Tower. The nearest metro station (Tower Hill) is about 200 m away, within a five minute walk. Thus, the hotel is centrally located in the heart of London and offers an ideal starting point for sightseeing.
